This graph plots changing proportions of women in both chambers of the Texas Legislature from 1923 when the first women was elected through the 2009 session. From the 1920s through the 1960s just a handful of women won seats in either chamber. But since the early 1970s the proportion of women has steadily, if unevenly, increased in both the House and the Senate. In neither chamber, however, does the percentage of women legislators match the percentage of women in the state's population.
