SUMMER 2017 LEGISLATIVE INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT EMPLOYER NAME: Texas Senate. Position: Legislative Intern for Honorable Royce West, State Senator, District 23. Location: Austin, Texas. Pay: Unpaid. Course credit may be available. COMPANY DESCRIPTION: The Texas Senate is one of two houses comprising the Texas Legislature. The legislature will meet for a thirty-day special session beginning on Tuesday, July 18th. DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The intern will work under the supervision of Senator West’s general counsel and legislative director. Duties will include: attending and summarizing committee hearings, with a focus on the State Affairs Committee; analyzing bills; making recommendations regarding the senator's position on bills; drafting potential questions for floor debate; assisting with speeches; meeting with constituents and lobbyists; researching and proposing potential legislation; legal research and writing as needed; responding to constituent inquiries; and general office duties. DURATION OF POSITION: This posting is open ended, but will be of at least 30 days' duration. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: • Some familiarity with the Texas Legislature. • Good research and writing skills. • Ability to work under pressure and on deadline. • Ability to work with minimal supervision at times. OTHER: • Hours will be determined by the needs of the senate office, the intern’s class schedule, and any requirements they may have to meet to receive credit, if available.
