Job Description:
We’re looking for students who care about solving the problems that America faces. If that’s you, then apply to be an intern with TexPIRG today. Advocacy As an intern with TexPIRG, you’ll help us educate and engage people on issues like solar energy, consumer rights, the democratic process, and Wall Street reform, all in an effort to enact policies that benefit the public. Whether it’s by getting the issue into the media, helping to grow our coalitions, or organizing events, you’ll be helping us build the public support it takes to win. About TexPIRG TexPIRG is a consumer group that stands up to powerful interests whenever they threaten our health and safety, our financial security, or our right to fully participate in our democratic society. For decades, we’ve stood up for consumers, countering the influence of big banks, insurers, chemical manufacturers and other powerful special interests. When consumers are cheated or the voices of ordinary citizens are drowned out by special interest lobbyists, TexPIRG speaks up and takes action. We uncover threats to public health and well-being and fight to end them, using the time-tested tools of investigative research, media exposés, grassroots organizing, advocacy and litigation. TexPIRG’s mission is to deliver persistent, result-oriented public interest activism that protects consumers, encourages a fair, sustainable economy, and fosters responsive, democratic government. TexPIRG interns will: • Organize events that help give visibility to our issues and our brand to a wider audience • Learn more advanced tools for political coalition building including one on one meetings and personal story telling • Reach out to potential partner organizations to extend our network of public advocates • Connect with local grassroots donors and volunteers to increase organizational capacity • Write opinion pieces to be published in relevant news markets • Work closely with TexPIRG staff in the day to day operations of the office • Meet a wide range of non-profit political advocates, including potential future employers • Join a cause that they can be proud to support Experience for Social Change Careers An internship with TexPIRG gives you the training and the skills you need to land a job in the social change movement after graduation. Candidates with internship experience are highly considered for our full-time positions after graduation. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in national campaign briefings and activist skills trainings, all while getting in-state experience and mentorship from their lead campaign organizer. Details Internships with TexPIRG are un-paid. Students may receive academic credit from their college or university. TexPIRG will also participate in college work-study programs. Interns work part time (10-15 hrs/week) or full time (25-30 hrs/week). Interns will participate in national campaign briefings and trainings while getting in-state experience and mentorship from their supervisor. Qualifications We are looking for people who are organized, responsible, have good written and verbal communication skills, and are able to take initiative on projects. The ideal candidate will be working toward a degree in political science, or related field, or have some campaign training or experience. Passion for the cause of combating powerful special interests is also weighed strongly.
