The Policy Intern performs basic research and technical assistance relating to Medicaid,
CHIP, SNAP, and other health and human services policy. Work includes research and
analysis concerning federal, state, and medical policy related to fraud, waste and abuse
in Medicaid, SNAP, and other health and human services programs. Position will work
under considerable supervision with IG staff.
Essential Job Functions:
Performs research and produces reports for IG's Public Policy staff regarding Medicaid,
CHIP, and other health and human services policy and managed care contracts.
Researches state and federal law, rules, regulations, State Plan, and medical policy
related to a broad range of health and human services topics, with emphasis on
preventing, reducing, and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse.
Prepares concise and complete written reports to present research and findings with
recommendations.
Performs other work as assigned.
Experience:
Required:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year college or university.
Experience in researching and analyzing complex program and policy issues.
Strong interest in learning about health and human service programs.
Current enrollment in a graduate level program.
Preferred:
Experience in researching, developing, interpreting, monitoring, or communicating
Medicaid, CHIP, or other Texas Health and Human Services policy, procedure,
managed care contracts, or processes.
Experience in preparing written work-related documents.

The Health and Human Services Commission Office of Inspector General is seeking
candidates for an unpaid Policy Intern. This position is designed for 15-20 hours per
week, and may be used, with the University’s approval, for academic credit. If required
by the academic program, this position may work up to 40 hours a week and for multiple
semesters.
The Office of Inspector General strengthens the Health and Human Services
Commission's capacity to combat fraud, waste, and abuse in publicly funded state-run
Health and Human Services programs.
