This table provides a detailed look at data from which the previous graphics were drawn. The table examines Texas state government, local government in Texas, and the composite of the two. The first column in each section (columns two, five, and eight) report the number of full-time equivalent employees as of 2003 at each level. As we descend from national to state to local government the number of employees increases dramatically from about 165,000 federal government employees in Texas, to about 265,000 state employees, to more than 987,000 local government employees. Columns three and six report the total payroll for the month of March 2003 for each functional category of government employment. We can multiply by twelve to obtain estimates of annual payroll outlays. Annual total outlays are recast as wages per full-time equivalent government employee in columns four and seven. Finally, column nine examines the percentage of all state and local government employees in Texas working in various functional areas of government. Primary and secondary education employee by far the most and have the largest payroll. Joined with higher education about sixty percent of state and local government employees and payroll are devoted to public education at all levels.
