The two images in this feature depict the distribution of state government employment by county in Texas in 2003. The left image shows the distribution of state government employment by county which ranges from zero government employees in the most sparsely populated of west Texas counties to more than 59 thousand employees in Travis county (Austin), the state capital. The largest concentrations of state employees live and work in the state's urban centers of which Travis county is one. The right image shows the distribution of state government employment as a percentage of each county's population. As this image shows, state government employment is more important proportionally in some counties than in others. In general, the state employs larger percentages of the population in counties with state prison facilities and other big state facilities like universities and hospitals. The numbers in some counties on the map on the right indicate the number of state prison facilities in those counties that have them.
