This bar graph depicts the number of changes to the Texas constitution each legislative session that were either ratified or rejected by the state's electorate. Overall since 1879 more than seventy percent of proposed amendments have been ratified. But since the 1960s, as Texas began to modernize, amendment activity has risen sharply. More than sixty-one percent of all amendment proposals have been made since 1960. From 1879 to 1959 the legislature proposed 234 amendments, on average 5.7 each session. Of these the public ratified just more than sixty-one percent. Since 1960 the legislature has proposed 369 amendments, an average of 16.8 per session, of which almost seventy-seven percent have been ratified.
