This table provides a detailed comparison using eight pie charts among the five so-called majority-minority states, the remaining states, and the United States as a whole. Majority-minority states are those in which minority groups, including Hispanics, together constitute a majority of the population. The five majority-minority states as of 2004 are Hawaii (93 percent minorities), the District of Columbia (71.7 percent), New Mexico (58.8 percent), California (58 percent), and - the newest member of the group - Texas (51.5 percent). Minority populations in the remaining states fall well short of majority status. In only a handful of these states do minority populations exceed 40 percent of the total - Mississippi (40.5 percent), Georgia (40.6 percent), Arizona (40.6 percent), Maryland (41.3 percent), and New York (42.5 percent). And in a half-dozen states - Maine (4.1 percent), Vermont (4.2 percent), West Virginia (5.7 percent), New Hampshire (6.1 percent), Iowa (8.6 percent), and North Dakota (9.2 percent) - minorities make up less than 10 percent of the population.
