These pie charts compare the ethnic profiles of deathrow inmates in Texas from 1923-1973 with those on deathrow from 1976-2004 and compares deathrow inmate populations in both periods of the state's ethnic population in 1975 and 2002. In general, ethnic minorities (black and latino Texans) are overrepresented on deathrow as compared with the state's ethnic profile. As state and prison populations have boomed since 1975 and as the state's ethnic profile has shifted, the ethnic profile of Texas deathrow inmates has shifted too. In particular, the proportion of latino inmates from 1976-2004 is much higher than from 1923-1973. The proportion of black prisoners--still the largest category and still far above the proportion of black Texans overall--dropped significantly in the recent period (40%) as compared with the earlier period (57%). The proportion of white deathrow inmates also dropped.
