These charts compare the ethnic profiles of inmates incarcerated in Texas prisons in 1975 with those in prison in 2002 and with the state's population in 1975 and 2002. In general, ethnic minorities (black and latino Texans) are overrepresented in the Texas prison population as compared with the state's ethnic profile. As state and prison populations have boomed since 1975 and as the state's ethnic profile has shifted, the ethnic profile of Texas inmates has shifted too. In particular, the proportion of latino inmates is now much higher than in 1975. The proportion of black prisoners--still the largest category and still far above the proportion of black Texans overall--dropped slightly since 1975. The proportion of white inmates dropped more sharply.
