This chart plots changing proportions of Democrats and Republicans in the Texas Senate from 1939-2007. The Senate was solidly Democratic from 1939-1965. From the late 1960s the number of Republicans in the Senate slowly but regularly increased until, following the 1996 election, Republicans commanded a majority in the Texas Senate for the first time since Reconstruction.
