This area chart uses blocks of color to show the changes in proportion Anglo, African-American, and Hispanic members of the Texas Legislature from 1971 to 2009. Anglos are by far the largest group comprising, even today, just under 70% of legislators. Black legislators make up 8.8% of the membership. Hispanic legislators constitute 20% of the membership. By comparison the 2000 census showed that only 52% of Texans are Anglos while 12% are African-American and 32% are Hispanic. An additional 4% fall in yet other categories.
