The chart shows the trend in the Republican percentage of all contributions to Democratic and Republican candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives nationally and in the South from 1980-2002. Minority Republicans received less than 50% of contributions until 1994 when they won the majority. The shift in the majority and in the flow of political money is due largely to the rise of southern Republicans and the demise of southern one-party Democratic dominance. The new national Republican majority now receives more than 50% of all contributions, a large portion of which flow to the now heavily Republican southern delegation.
