The chart depicts the trend in the trend in party identification in Texas from 1952-2002. Over this half century Democratic identification shrunk from nearly 80% of the Texas population to about 25%. Republican identification has grown from less than 10% in 1952 to just more than 35%. Independent identifiers, constituting about 20% of the population in 1952, today are the largest group including about 40% of Texans.
