The chart shows both the growth in total number of child support cases handled by the state of Texas from 1983 to 2002 and also the decline since passage of national welfare reform legislation in 1996 of the proportion of all cases involving recipients of temporary assistance to needy families (TANF) more commonly known as welfare.
