Job Description: 
The Legislative Intern will perform administrative duties in the Office of State Representative Ernest Bailes while working directly with the Representative on matters critical to the day-to-day operations of the Capitol office. The position entails answering the telephone, greeting visitors, handling legislative documents, completing constituent casework, writing and editing correspondence, and working on various special projects at the direction of the Representative or Chief of Staff. • Oversee various administrative tasks, including sorting the mail, filing, greeting guests, answering phones, and working to ensure the office is run efficiently • Draft and edit correspondence addressed to constituents, elected officials and the media • Assist constituents with state issues, while keeping records of constituent correspondence in the Correspondence Management System (CMS) • Perform other duties as assigned by the Representative or Chief of Staff

This position requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability and willingness to work in a fast pace environment. General knowledge of the legislative process is preferred. The legislative intern must be able to handle multiple assignments at the same time. He or she must have the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly, both orally and in writing. Maintaining a professional appearance and working effectively with members of the Legislature, their staffs, department and agency staff, constituents, and the public are imperative. The willingness to maintain the confidentiality of office work product, policies and procedures is critical for this position.
