Making Judicial Bypasses for Abortion for a Minor More Difficult (June 2015)

Respondents were asked, "As you might know, in Texas, parental consent is required for a minor to obtain an abortion. However, a judge can bypass the parental consent requirement for a minor if seeking permission from their parents could endanger them. Do you support or oppose making it more difficult for minors in these circumstances to receive an abortion without their parents' consent?"

In a piece in The New York Times' Upshot blog, Lynn Vavreck, a political scientist at U.C.L.A., notes a surprising degree of 'harmony' amongst the public when it comes to abortion attitudes. Attitudes in Texas largely reflect the attitudes Vavreck finds in the national data, though Texas attitudes evidence  a higher degree of polarization between Democrats and Republicans on the issue.

Availability of Abortion (February 2013)

Respondents were asked, "What is your opinion on the availability of abortion?" and given the response options: "By law, abortion should never be permitted"; "The law should permit abortion only in case of rape, incest or when the woman's life is in danger"; "The law should permit abortion for reasons other than rape, incest, or danger to the woman's life, but only after the need for the abortion has been clearly established"; and "By law, a woman should always be able to obtain an abortion as a matter of personal choice."

Greg Abbott has always been more comfortable making this campaign about Wendy Davis than about the issues that Davis wants to discuss. The timing of Davis’ book release may have inadvertently helped him do just that.
