Party identification is calculated according to the PID7 variable, where respondents who consider themselves to be "strong," "weak" or "lean" Democrat are considered Democrats, voters who consider themselves to be "strong," "weak" or "lean" Republican are considered Republicans, and only those voters who do not indicate a partisan preference are considered political independents.
