The two images in this feature depict the distribution of federal government employment by county in Texas in 2003. The left image shows the distribution of federal government employment by county which ranges from two government employees in the most sparsely populated of west Texas counties to more than 27 thousand employees in Bexar county (San Antonio) with its large collection of military bases and their attached civilian employees. The largest concentrations of federal employees live and work in the state's urban centers of which Bexar county is one. The right image shows the distribution of federal government employment as a percentage of each county's population. As this image shows, government employment is more important proportionally to border and south Texas counties than to major urban centers and other parts of the state. A smattering of counties elsewhere in the state, many with sizable military facilities, the federal government also employee larger portions of the county population, notably the Temple-Waco area east of Fort Hood.
