More than 180 thousand Texans worked for the federal government in Texas in 2003. The largest concentrations, as the left hand map shows, work in the state's major urban centers. But, as the map above right shows, the federal government tends to employ larger portions of the civilian population in border and south Texas counties as well as counties hosting or neighboring U.S. military installations.
