The chart shows the relative balance in general election expenditures by Democratic and Republican candidates for governor of Texas from 1978 to 2002. Spending was fairly evening matched through most of the period. In 1998, Republican incumbent governor George Bush substantially outspent Democratic challenger Gary Mauro. In 2002, however, Democratic challenger Tony Sanchez massively outspent Republican incumbent Rick Perry.
