The Texas delegation to the United States House of Representatives was dominated until very recently by the Democratic Party. Republicans didn't manage to win a single seat, barring Reconstruction, until 1895. Even as Republicans made electoral gains in statewide races they failed to win more than a handful of elections to the US House. Only after the controversial redistricting effort undertaken by the Republican-controlled Texas legislature in 2003 did the GOP finally overtake the Democrats by winning seventeen seats to the Democrats' sixteen.
