This table provides a detailed look at the average total dollars consumers in different income groups and at different levels of education devote annually to different types of expenditure. Expenditures of all types rise with consumer income and with education level, though as was seen in the comparison of expenditure shares in the previous graphics the relative proportions different groups devote to different types of expenditures tends to be more constant. The two lowest income groups engage run deficits spending more than their income on average, particularly those in the lowest group who are roughly at or below the poverty line. The two higher income groups, on the other hand, run sizable surpluses. Comparison by education level shows that those with a high school diploma earn sixty percent more than those without a diploma. College graduates in turn earn almost ninety percent more than high school graduates.
