This table shows the growth since 1970 in the number of black elected public officials in Texas. Blacks have made inroads in elected public office in Texas at every level, particularly at the municipal level and in school districts. However, black elected officials remain only a small percentage of all elected officials--well below the approximately twelve percent of the Texas population with black roots.
