Be a member of the Texas Model House of Representatives or Model Senate

Model Legislative session will be from June 22nd to June 26th in Austin, at the State Capitol. 

We are looking for 5 members to be in the Model Senate; 60 to be members of the Model House of Representatives. 

Summary: As a Model State Legislator you will be in the Model Legislature, representing various districts across Texas. This role involves proposing, debating, and voting on laws and policies that could impact the state’s residents, economy, and governance. Model State Legislators work to address public needs, draw up proposals to allocate state resources, and ensure effective and ethical government operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Draft, sponsor, and review proposed model legislation
• Debate bills and participate in committee hearings and investigations
• Vote on laws, budgets, and resolutions
• Represent the interests and concerns of constituents
• Possibily meet with community members, advocacy groups, and stakeholders
• Collaborate with other model legislators, model government officials, and model government agencies
• Conduct research on policy issues and legislative proposals

Qualifications:

• Must be in good standing with educational institutions and in the community (age, residency, etc.)
• Strong interest in public policy, law, public service leadership, and government processes
• Good communication, negotiation, and public speaking skills
• Ability to analyze complex issues and make informed decisions
• Demonstrated commitment to public service and ethical leadership

Work Environment:

• Primarily based in the state capitol during legislative sessions

Impact:

• State Legislators play a critical role in shaping state laws, influencing public policy, and improving the quality of life for residents through effective governance.  As a model legislator, you will learn about the mechanics of state legislatures, rules of state legislatures, policy formation, and how to conduct meetings.  
• We will put you in positions to network with state legislators and their staff to educate you on how to be a state legislator and to increase you chances of obtaining a legislative internship for the 2027 session.
