Data Analytics Internship
Offered By
Governor Greg Abbott's Campaign
Job Location
Austin
Job Description
Our offices are open again and we are looking for interns for this summer, as well as the upcoming Fall semester. ABOUT US: Texans for Greg Abbott is the political campaign committee for Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Our focus is to get Governor Abbott re-elected Governor in 2022, which entails many different projects along the way. This year we are working closely with the Governor's allies across the state, making sure they win their own elections this November, allowing Governor Abbott to continue to fulfill his policy agenda in the 2021 Legislative Session. We are one of the largest non-presidential campaigns in the country, with an enormous in-house operation. ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP: As a data analytics intern, you will get to work closely with our data, digital and political departments and get hands-on experience in political campaigning. Our previous data interns have been responsible for keeping track of various metrics: - Candidate filings for public offices - Money raised, endorsements gathered by other campaigns of note - Top donors, special-interest groups and other 3rd party influencers - Polling data - Historical election data - Opponent activity ...and more. While no previous excel experience is required, a lot of the work in this internship does involve spreadsheets, and we will be glad to teach you. Even if you have Excel experience, it is an incredibly powerful software that can do a lot. All of our previous interns have left with an additional wealth of experience in using Excel, primarily using advanced formulas and data manipulation methods. For those really interested in the data side, Excel can only work with files up to a million rows. Most of our files are much larger than that, so we primarily do everything else on a SQL server. For our few previous data interns really interested in this aspect, they've been able to learn and work in SQL. In additions, at times we may work with other data languages and software such as Python, R, SPSS and Stata. Again, most of our interns never reach this stage, but it is something our team does work on from time to time. On top of keeping track of some of the metrics listed above, our interns help set up grassroots systems for our political department (think phone calls and door knocking). You won't have to actually call or knock -- just the backend database that stores all the information for the volunteers and staff members to use. In addition our interns help write various reports, from fundraising to historical to grassroots activity reports, most of our previous interns have left creating at least one high-quality report using various tools we have available. Overall this internship is a little different than your generic political internships. Your time will be less spent picking up the phone and answering e-mails, and more spent helping keep track of the many things our department keeps track of, as well as the daily data tasks that inevitably pop up. That isn't to say every once in a while you won't be required to pick up the phone or other traditional intern tasks -- but it won't be much. If a career in politics and campaigning is something you're interested in, we have former interns currently positioned at some of the highest levels of our campaign. Most of our data interns have come back to intern in future semesters and interns from all of our departments are consistently hired. Whether you just want a cool, unique experience with one of the largest campaigns in the country or you want your own career in politics, this internship is a great place to start. INTERNSHIP DETAILS: Because of COVID-19, things are working a little different at the office. We have generally been extremely flexible with our interns, for the most part allowing them to set their own schedules. That will not be possible for the foreseeable future as the office is operating under limited capacity. We will still work with your class schedule but will likely need to set a fixed office schedule until we begin operating at normal capacity.
