Job Description:
Texas Campaign for the Environment (TCE) has been fighting for every Texan’s right to clean land, clean air, and clean water since 1991. Our purpose is to organize communities across the state to stand up to big polluters, to keep the pressure on our elected officials to do everything in their power to protect the people they serve, and to keep our homes and livelihoods safe and healthy for the present day as well as the generations to come. TCE strives to live by the organizational values of intentionality, justice, respect, teamwork, and vision. All employees, as well as the organization as a whole, use these values to guide the work that we take on, as well as how we go about doing that work. These values are used in our organizational strategic planning and our individual performance evaluations. We hold grassroots community engagement as a fundamental value of our organization. We win campaigns and build political power by engaging community members year round with door-to-door, face-to-face, grassroots organizing. Knocking on doors for the last thirty years all across Texas has brought about monumental changes in our state and local environmental policies, and we’ve held polluters accountable for their actions! TCE has truly pioneered a community-based structure of organizing. We currently need new voices to add to our current staff of professional, skilled, and passionate activists to strengthen our community lobbying presence in Central Texas. We offer extensive training, opportunities for management experience, and travel. Field Organizers will create relationships within designated communities and build our grassroots base of supporters. Organizers will be held to high expectations of performance with weekly and monthly goals for various organizing activities. The key responsibility for the Field Organizer is conducting membership recruitment, fundraising and letter-writing drives within the community, primarily through COVID-safe door-to-door canvassing. When Organizers are able to demonstrate proficiency in their core responsibilities, they will have opportunities to spend work time taking on other tasks, which could include research, preparing for direct actions, lobby days, digital organizing, and assisting in activist and donor development. The hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. (schedule may occasionally vary based on campaigns). Qualifications High-level relationship building skills with the ability to build consensus, engage a wide range of diverse stakeholders and allies, and navigate complex community and political dynamics. Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Word, Google Sheets, et al Ability to work independently, problem solve, and manage time and priorities. Good listening, speaking, and writing communication skills. Genuine commitment to the environment, progressive politics, and the vision of a just and equitable society.
