ABOUT ORGANIZATION Founded in 2006, Raise Your Hand Texas advances public education through innovative leadership and advocacy for Texas’s 5.4 million students. POSITION DESCRIPTION The Government Relations Fellow will join a fast-paced team focused on providing legislative support at the Texas Capitol to improve public education in Texas. The GR Fellow will review, track and analyze legislation in committees and on the legislative floors and report back to RYHT staff through Slack and other communication tools. The position is available for up to 30 hours per week, depending upon the Fellow’s schedule, at a rate of $20 - $25 per hour depending on experience and level of education. The position is initially offered from January through June of 2023 with the possibility of continuation. RESPONSIBILITIES ● Track and report on activities in legislative committees ● Utilize bill tracking software to provide real time analysis of legislation before the Texas House of Representatives and Texas Senate ● Assist members of Raise Your Hand Texas with initiatives and events ● Interact with stakeholders, including legislative staff, educators, and employees of education associations. ● Provide support for short- and long-term projects ● Create and update online databases QUALIFICATIONS ● Graduate student (preferred) in an education, public policy, or journalism-related field Self-motivated, goal-oriented, and a team player ● Alignment with the core beliefs and mission of Raise Your Hand Texas ● Familiarity with, and commitment to improving, the Texas K-12 public school system ● Access and familiarity with education-related research databases ● Excellent organizational and computer skills, including Office 365 and Google Workplace ● Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills ● Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills ● Authorized to work in the United States ● Based in Austin ● Some paid travel may be requested, depending upon the fellow’s schedule
