Job Description
Every Texan’s Vision and Core Purpose At Every Texan (formerly Center for Public Policy Priorities) we envision a Texas where people of all backgrounds can contribute to and share in the prosperity of our state. Unfortunately, not all Texans can access the conditions they need to thrive. We believe one of the most effective ways to advance social justice is to strengthen public policy. We are deeply committed to policy solutions that advance racial, ethnic and gender equity, expanding opportunity for Every Texan. You can learn more about our work at www.everytexan.org. Every Texan is an equal opportunity employer committed to inclusive hiring and dedicated to diversity in our work and staff. We do not discriminate in employment opportunities or practices based on actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions), age, marital status, sexual orientations, gender identity or expression, veteran status, uniform service member status, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law. Women, people of color (including multilingual and multicultural individuals), LGBTQ+ persons, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Every Texan is a unionized workplace. Internship Description The intern will work with Every Texan Health & Food Justice team members (see www.everytexan.org for more). The intern will support the team’s work to ensure all Texans have access to quality affordable health care, that no Texan goes hungry, and that all Texans have access to needed public benefits. The internship entails a significant amount of nonprofit/coalition/campaign administration and support duties; specifically, facilitation of the statewide Children’s Health Coverage Coalition (CHCC, see http://www.texaschip.org/) and its Outreach and Eligibility Technical Assistance workgroup and meetings. In addition, the intern will provide support as assigned for activities and communications of the Cover Texas Now Coalition (https://covertexasnow.org/). Because these coalitions operate year-round, the ideal successful intern will be able to continue through May 2023 (subject to ongoing availability of funding). The intern will also support work related to access to school meals, SNAP and other nutrition programs, and enhanced supports for kinship caregiver families (kids being raised by relatives other than their parents). This intern will: - assist with outreach to educate schools and families about various federal nutrition programs; with supervision of team members research and author a project related to improving food security - assist team members with coordinating meeting planning with CHC Coalition meeting chairs and speakers housed in multiple organizations; - attend CHCC monthly meetings to take minutes and be responsible for soliciting input for, drafting, and sending regular communications to the CHCC’s listserv,; - assist the chairperson of the CHCC’s Outreach and Eligibility Technical Assistance workgroup with bi-monthly meeting planning logistics and communications; - assist in taking minutes and providing support for meetings of Every Texan’s internal race equity work group - assist team members with other policy and data analysis as needed related to public insurance, and health reforms, and/or nutrition policy; - be encouraged to author or joint-author blog posts or other agreed-on research products on related policy topics; and - assist with other necessary tasks as they arise. If the intern requests, we will work with them to identify an area of health or nutrition policy research that is relevant to Every Texan’s work and coordinated with the intern’s academic goals in which they can engage. As Every Texan does not employ any dedicated clerical staff, interns (and policy staff alike) are expected to do their own clerical work and on occasion help out with team preparations for events, etc. The ideal candidate will be prepared to proactively seek out the guidance they need from the Health & Food Justice policy staff in our busy and sometimes hectic workplace. We encourage the intern to act as an active partner in our Health & Food Justice team’s work and the Children’s Health Coverage Coalition leadership. Minimum Qualifications: Interns at Every Texan must be current students at a higher education institution (i.e., not recent graduates). Graduate students with a demonstrated interest in health policy, nutrition and basic needs policy, and/or coalition building are preferred. Open to international students. Interns must be based in Texas. Dates of Internship: Starts in May 25, 2022 and runs through May 2023 (subject to ongoing availability of funding). The exact start date and end date for this position is negotiable. Salary: Intern will be paid in accordance with Every Texan’s normal payroll practices and will be subject to the usual, required withholding. The rate of pay is $15/hour: - For 20 hours per week May-August 2022, and - For 15-20 hours per week from September 2022 to May 2023, subject to ongoing availability of funding. As a temporary employee, an intern is entitled to Every Texan’s paid holidays if a holiday falls on a day she/he/they would otherwise have worked and accrued sick leave based on hours worked. Interns are not entitled to any other employee benefits such as vacation leave, health and life insurance, employer-sponsored pension, and cell phone reimbursements. Employment Authorization: Open to international students with temporary employment authorization.
