Job Description
The Office of State Representative James Talarico is seeking a motivated individual interested in gaining valuable first-hand experience implementing the interim legislative strategy and supporting the day-to-day operations of a Capitol legislative office. Though the position is part-time, it may lead to a full-time position. OUR OFFICE Our team is driven by a commitment to servant leadership. No task is too big or too small in the pursuit of providing quality service to the Texans of House District 52. As the youngest member of the Texas Legislature, State Representative James Talarico is also committed to creating a team culture the mentors and supports young people in the pursuit of public service. We are a team that: • Values public service, celebrates difference and inclusion, and genuinely cares about people; • Sees human stories when reading data points or statistics; • Is determined in our curiosity to understand the "why" and "how" of our state's greatest challenges to inform best solutions; and • Cares more about getting stuff done than about who gets the credit (though, it's definitely nice to be recognized). CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Our team is looking for a part-time Legislative Director (20 - 30 hours per week) to join our office for the Spring 2020 semester. The Legislative Director's primary responsibility will be to assist in the implementation of our interim legislative strategy. The Legislative Director will also be expected to support management of the front desk, as well as assist with administrative and constituent work. We are looking for a current graduate or undergraduate student with previous legislative experience who would be available to work part-time (including some weekends and evenings), possesses strong research and writing skills, and demonstrates a keen self-awareness. This position will assist with: • Researching legislation and writing issue briefs with a special focus on education, restorative justice, and health care • Staffing and briefing the Representative for Capitol and district events • Facilitating meetings with key stakeholders • Assisting with constituent management as needed • Performing other administrative tasks and duties as directed
