Job Description
The Office of State Representative Terry Canales is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented undergraduate or graduate student for a part-time, unpaid internship who will work in his Capitol office in Austin, TX, for the remainder of the 89th Session's interim, September through December 2026. The ideal candidate is a student interested in Texas politics, public policy, and legislative affairs. Interns are expected to manage multiple job duties in a fast-paced environment and be team-oriented. No previous experience is required.
Duties
- Attend and monitor committee hearings, stakeholder meetings, and Capitol briefings as assigned.
- Assist staff with researching and developing potential legislation, including reviewing existing Texas statutes and proposed legislation.
- Prepare materials for meetings with constituents, state agencies, local governments, advocacy organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Answer phones, greet visitors, and perform other administrative responsibilities as necessary.
- Perform additional duties assigned by office staff.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general office technology
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
- Familiarity with South Texas issues and the Rio Grande Valley is preferred
