Legislative Intern
Offered By
Representative Diego Bernal
Job Location
Austin
Job Description
Dates: April – June 1, 2015 The office of State Representative Diego Bernal is seeking interns for the remainder of the spring semester to serve as legislative aides in his capitol office. Bernal is a Democratic lawmaker serving his first term in the Texas House of Representatives. Bernal’s legislative agenda includes work to ensure that high quality public education is available to all children in Texas, rein in predatory payday lending, and expand access to health care. Our office provides public service internships for graduate students and experienced undergraduates. The internship is an excellent opportunity for students to gain meaningful professional experience in policy analysis, communications and press work, and constituent services. During the legislative session, interns in our capitol office serve as Legislative Aides, helping to shepherd legislation through the process. Responsibilities may include responding to constituent inquiries, researching solutions, meeting with stakeholders, and preparing the Representative for hearings and floor debates. Legislative interns must work a minimum of 15 hours per week. While our internships are unpaid, we work closely with students to ensure that their assignments support their academic and professional goals. Interns receive training and mentoring from senior legislative staff. We also provide successful interns with information and letters of reference as they seek employment.
