Job Description
Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell is seeking one full-time OR two part-time interns for his Capitol office in Austin for the spring 2018 semester. In his very active capacity as Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission, Senator Birdwell is able to offer interns a unique opportunity to acquire new skills and gain first-hand knowledge of public policy and the legislative process in the Texas Legislature. Duties include but are not limited to: conducting research and writing memos and reports on policy issues; working with legislative staff to prepare Senator Birdwell for Sunset hearings and interim committee hearings; responding to constituent inquiries on assigned committee and policy areas; performing administrative functions related to the legislative process. Standard/typical general office duties are also expected, e.g. answering phones, sorting mail, filing documents. Ideal candidates have: strong writing and research skills; analytical reasoning and critical thinking skills; relevant experience and/or coursework in public policy; clear understanding of confidentiality and ethics; ability to be independent, responsible, positive, a team player. Expectations (negotiable) for full-time intern: 9-4pm at least four days per week. Expectations (negotiable) for part-time interns: four hours of availability daily M/W/F or six hours of availability daily T/Th. Limited stipends availability for highly-qualified full-time candidates.
