Job Description
The Capitol (Austin) Office of State Representative Chris Turner, chair of the House Democratic Caucus, is currently seeking applicants for two unpaid summer intern positions. As an intern, students will have the opportunity to learn about the legislative process, research the acute issues impacting the state and District 101, provide support with communications and social media, and help prepare information for interim committee hearings. Interns will be asked to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and all intern positions are unpaid. Each intern will perform a variety of tasks. Task assignments are broken down into three basic categories: clerical support, legislative research and constituent services. The role of the intern, as well as full-time staff, is to serve the public while learning about the inner workings of a state representative's office. Clerical Support: • Database management • Opening and processing mail • Answering phones and greeting visitors • Filing and scanning Legislative Research: • Attending issue and legislative briefings and preparing summary memos • Performing research on issues or topics related to interim committee charges and attending committee hearings • Preparing for the 86th Legislative Session by doing research on issues important to District 101 and the state Communications & Correspondence: • Aiding the Chief of Staff with drafting office communications, including social media • Preparing response letters to constituent correspondence • Serving as a liaison between the office and the various state agencies to facilitate communication between constituents and the appropriate state agencies Interns may be asked to attend staff meetings, events, as well as any other meetings directed by state Representative Chris Turner or the Chief of Staff.
