Job Description
Legislative reporting intern This internship is an opportunity to cover the 2025 Texas legislative session alongside veteran editors and reporters. The intern will learn about policymaking and craft daily stories for radio and digital audiences in Texas and, via NPR, across the country. We’re seeking a college student in the Austin area who is passionate about covering the issues that deeply affect Texans’ lives – and how lawmakers are addressing those topics. Our previous interns have reported on everything from abortion legislation to proposals to change the way Texans vote to bills filed in response to the state’s catastrophic winter storm. The intern will be matched with a mentor. SCHEDULE: Part time (20 hours per week), Jan. 13 to June 6, 2025. We can work with you to set a schedule. Ideally, you’ll be available for two eight-hour full days and one four-hour half day each week. WORK LOCATION: In person in Austin, at the KUT newsroom and at the Texas Capitol. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Nov. 3, 2024. PAYMENT: We pay $16 per hour. WHAT YOU’LL DO Report in person at the Texas Capitol at committee hearings, on the House and Senate floor and at press conferences and rallies. Record audio and produce newscast spots and audio features. Equipment will be provided. Write news stories and features for digital audiences. Pitch stories. Respond quickly to breaking news. Conduct research and interviews to provide context and explain the potential impact of legislation. Occasionally dive into topics outside the Legislature as assigned. WHO YOU ARE College students enrolled in an accredited degree program in spring 2025 are eligible. You should have strong writing skills and a solid understanding of AP style. BONUS IF YOU’VE GOT IT Previous experience in policy, journalism, audio or radio is preferred but not required. HOW TO APPLY Please fill out our Google Form. You’ll need to include the following: Resume. Cover letter explaining why you want to cover the Texas Legislature, why you are interested in public radio and why you’d be a great candidate. Three work samples, such as audio or digital news stories for a campus publication or class assignment. Attachments or links are fine, but don’t submit anything that’s behind a paywall. You won’t hear back from us immediately, but we promise to respond to all applicants by mid-December. Questions? Contact Corrie MacLaggan, corrie@kera.org
