STOLEN SEASON: A Winter Policy Intensive

Presented by the Groundbreakers Policy Coalition (GPC)

What does it really cost to feed a child well for 180 days — and what’s being stolen from them along the way?

This winter, the Groundbreakers Policy Coalition invites proactive, autonomous, and visionary students to join a 3-week immersive policy lab exploring how joy, rest, and equity are politicized and reclaimed. Inspired by pop culture classics like The Grinch and Home Alone, we’re unpacking what it means to “take back” a season that could use some redesigning.

Program Dates: December 2 – January 19

Format: Remote, self-directed with weekly live labs

Application Deadline: November 23

🧊 What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct rapid policy investigations centered on education, food, energy, or housing justice
  • Participate in themed case studies using winter pop culture scenes as analytical frameworks
  • Develop your own micro-policy project and media artifact (infographic, memo, or mini campaign)
  • Join deep-dive discussions on who gets to rest, who has to work, and what “seasonal survival” looks like across communities

🎯 Learning Goals:

  • Examine how U.S. systems of governance and economy shape access to joy, rest, and time
  • Strengthen critical thinking, communication, and research autonomy
  • Build a culturally grounded, justice-oriented lens on seasonal inequities
  • Connect your findings to GPC’s spring policy tracks (Food, Energy, Education, Housing)

🌎 Ideal Applicants:

  • High school juniors/seniors, college students, or early-career changemakers
  • Must be self-motivated, communicative, and creative
  • AI-generated or ChatGPT cover letters are an automatic no. Use your own brain—use AI to assist, not to answer.

🧠 Core Question:

How have our seasons of rest, celebration, and survival been stolen—and how do we take them back?
