Job Description

Position Summary:

The Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC) is seeking a driven and detail-oriented Policy Intern to support the Caucus’s policy, research, and legislative preparation efforts. MALC works to advance policies that improve the lives of Latino Texans and supports its members through legislative advocacy, communications, and coalition-building. 

 

This internship is designed to provide meaningful exposure to policy development, legislative research, and coalition engagement. The Policy Intern will work closely with the General Counsel and MALC staff to support MALC’s preparation for the 90th Legislative Session. This position is open to undergraduate, graduate, and law students.

Why Work at MALC:

This internship provides direct exposure to legislative research and issue advocacy within a statewide caucus. Interns support policy research, briefings, and issue tracking on topics impacting Latino communities and gain practical experience in the legislative process.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

As the Policy Intern, responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with policy research and analyses on issues including but not limited to MALC’s legislative priorities

  • Drafting and developing policy briefs, memos, legislative ideas and strategy, and educational materials for MALC members

  • Tracking legislation / legislative actions, interim hearings and studies, and interim committee activity relevant to MALC priorities

  • Conducting legislative history research and interstate and federal legislative research

  • Tracking current events in politics as they relate to the Caucus’s mission and goals

  • Assisting with preparation for briefings, staff and stakeholder meetings, and policy discussions

  • Supporting coordination with coalition partners, advocates, and subject-matter experts

  • Supporting administrative and logistical tasks related to policy work, as needed

  • Performing other duties as assigned by MALC staff

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with staff and partners

  • Demonstrated interest and understanding in public policy, politics, law, or public service

  • Demonstrated experience in research and writing

 

Preferred Workdays, Hours, & Compensation:

  • $22/hour, part-time – 15 hours per week

  • Flexible schedule during weekday daytime hours, coordinated with MALC staff

  • Spring Internship (February – June) or Fall Internship (August – December)

 

Work Environment:

This internship requires in-person work in Austin, with some flexibility depending on assignments and scheduling. Interns should expect occasional evening or weekend hours during events or rapid-response.
