Policy & Research Associate

Reports to: Campaign Manager and Policy & Research Director
Location: Austin, TX — hybrid position, with some in-person event coverage throughout the city
Time commitment: 8-10 hours per week

About the Role: 
The Policy & Research Associate supports the Policy & Research Lead in building the substance behind everything the campaign says and stands for. You'll dig into District 1 issues, help track city ordinances and council actions, and prepare research materials that keep the campaign informed, credible, and ready for upcoming events. This is a great role for someone who wants hands-on experience in municipal policy research, without carrying the full weight of setting overall research strategy. 

What you'll do: 

• Research District 1 issues under the direction of the Policy & Research Lead.

• Help draft and fact-check position papers, talking points, and policy briefs.

• Track relevant city ordinances and city initiatives, and summarize key developments for the team.

• Assist in preparing one-page briefing materials ahead of debates, forums, press interviews, and community meetings.

• Organize and maintain a reference system for sources. 

• Attend select community meetings and hearings to gather firsthand input and take detailed notes.

What we're looking for: 

• Strong research and writing skills; comfortable synthesizing information into clear, concise summaries.

• Detail-oriented, with careful attention to accuracy and sourcing.

• Interest in local government, housing policy, or urban planning is a strong plus.

• Comfortable receiving direction and feedback, and iterating quickly.

• Familiarity with Google Drive.

• Connection to or genuine interest in District 1 and Austin's East Side communities is a strong plus.

• Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Vietnamese) is a plus.
