Policy & Research Intern
The Austin Apartment Association's Policy and Research internship offers a student or recent graduate a hands-on introduction to government affairs and public policy within a local trade association.
Working directly with the CEO and Director of government and community affairs, the intern gains practical experience monitoring local and state policy developments, conducting research on housing and regulatory issues, supporting committee operations, and engaging with elected officials, stakeholders, and community partners.
The intern also assists in event coordination, the Political Action Committee, and the adminstration of community housing programs, making this role an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in public policy, advocacy, and community engagement.
This is a paid, part-time hourly position (Averaging 15-20 hours a week).
Duties, Responsibilities:
- Monitor the Austin City Council, nearby municipalities (including Hays, Williamson, and Travis Counties), boards, commissions, and other relevant public meetings. Track proposed regulatory changes at the local, county, and state levels.
- Research pertinent policies and strategies, applying them to current issues facing the local industry. Produce a written analysis of policies in a clear, concise format.
- Attend and take detailed notes at applicable stakeholder meetings, compiling research and materials as necessary. Assist in developing positive relationships with elected officials and their staff, key media outlets, boards, and partner organizations.
- Assist in managing and coordinating AAA committee meetings and communications. Attend pertinent committee meetings and AAA functions as directed by the CEO or Director of Government and Community Affairs.
- Support the planning and coordination of special events, including fundraisers and major meetings.
- Assist with local and state election strategy and Political Action Committee (PAC) event planning and administration.
- Assist with compiling information required for lobbying reports, lobbyist registrations, or other government and/or PAC reports in consultation with the PAC Treasurer (CEO), and/or Director of Government and Community Affairs to ensure compliance with all relevant rules and regulations.
- Assist with the administration and management of AAA’s community housing programs.
Job Skills & Job Requirements:
- Expert-level working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite is required.
- High proficiency in videoconferencing platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, is required.
- Effective time management and ability to perform assigned tasks within established deadlines.
- Interact constructively with clients, members, and co-workers.
- Requires excellent communication skills, including oral and written skills, listening, and comprehension.
- Ability to occasionally attend events outside regular business hours.
- Occasional travel to event and meeting locations outside of the office.
- Occasional moving or manipulating items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Use of computers and other office equipment.
- Ability to work in-person in the Association’s offices.
