Job Description
Texas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is the membership organization that provides financial assistance, training and technical support to 71 local CASA programs serving foster children in 207 counties throughout Texas. Texas CASA is a leader in working to assure sound public policies on issues affecting the child welfare system, the well-being of children in state custody and other policy areas related to our mission. Texas CASA seeks a dynamic, motivated, and knowledgeable Public Policy Intern to support the Public Affairs Department with various tasks and research to support Texas CASA’s 2015 legislative agenda, the 2015 Texas CASA Child Welfare Primer and the 2015 CASA Day at the Capitol. Duties will include bill tracking and analysis, researching information for legislative testimony and other duties as assigned. The intern will also be responsible for helping to research and assess the impact of trauma, proven interventions and treatment strategies and implications for practice for all child welfare stakeholders. Texas CASA has received funding to develop a collaborative understanding of the impact of trauma, proven interventions and treatment strategies and implications for practice for all child welfare stakeholders: CASA volunteers, CPS caseworkers, judges, attorneys, service providers, educators, parents, adoption and kin placements. The intern will work to help plan for and coordinate this work. The chosen candidate will conduct and compile research needed to support the work and future recommendations of the stakeholder group. The intern may also be asked to perform other tasks, such as drafting text for the Texas CASA policy newsletter and/or creating educational resources such as webinars, handouts, website content, etc. Ideal candidates should be enrolled in or a spring 2014 graduate from a graduate program in social work, public affairs, or similar degree program. Candidates should have an appreciation for collaborative work and planning, a willingness to learn or to advance their knowledge of Texas’ legislative system and the ability to work well in a fast-paced, professional environment. Familiarity with the child welfare system and issues impacting children/youth in foster care is a plus. This is a part-time, 15-hour/week, spring internship for a graduate level student to begin January 12, 2015 ending May 29, 2015. There is a $3000 stipend associated with this internship. All applicants must be able to pass a background check.
