Offered By
State Representative Ryan Guillen
Job Location
Austin
Job Location (Other)
Texas State Capitol Building
Job Description
OPPORTUNITIES Legislative Session Interns in our office have the opportunity to address important issues as part of Representative Ryan Guillen's legislative agenda. They are also expected to research and present their own legislative priorities. They will learn, and implement, best practices for the day-to-day operations of a highly successful legislative office. Current students, post graduate students or students taking a break for the opportunity to learn the legislative process are welcome. No prior legislative experience is required but is welcomed. Full-time interns receive a preference, but we welcome both full-time and part-time interns. This summer and fall staff will respond to the needs of issues in the several Special Legislative Sessions and Committee Meetings, learning the functioning of the legislative process at both levels. Bill Ideas are welcome starting this summer from prospective interns for the next biennial legislative session starting in January, 2025. Interns will have your bill ideas debated and reviewed, and if approved by Representative Ryan Guillen, they will be drafted and presented in committee. Each session several of the bill ideas produced by our intern staff pass committee and some of our best bills over the years have been developed by interns and became state law. The rewards of learning the legislative process during the once-every-two-year session are many. They include the value you bring to professional organizations in your future career and expanded job opportunities. Former interns in our office today serve as chiefs of staff in other legislative offices, top lobbyists with some of the largest associations in Texas, and as government affairs specialists working for a variety of state agencies and federal offices.

Comments
An excellent opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of the legislative process, meet and communicate with other legislative staff from across Texas, and gain insight into how the laws that impact and enhance or limit every profession in our state are made and changed. Representative Ryan Guillen and his staff this year passed 82 bills out of the House of Representatives, the most passed in one session in history.
