Advocacy Assistant

The Texas Alliance of YMCAs seeks to hire a Public Policy & Advocacy Intern to support its works before and during the legislative session, as well as build stronger relationships with local elected officials.

Responsibilities will include tracking legislation, attending hearings, taking notes, preparing summaries and policy materials and communicating action related to the YMCA agenda to Y leaders across the state.  The intern will also work to strengthen the Texas YMCA's advocacy culture and capabilities by engaging local Y staff and board leaders with legislators and their staffs, local elected officials and state agency leaders.  The position will assist in helping to organize visits by public officials to local YMCA facilities and programs, and then developing communications and social media content to promote those visits.

This is expected to be a part-time position, and will report directly to the CEO of the Texas Alliance of YMCAs.  The intern will also partner with the Alliance's contract lobbyist and the VP of Strategic Partnerships.  Shared office space near the state capitol with the lobbyist will be available to work from.

The Texas Alliance of YMCAs is the umbrella organization that works to improve the impact and reach of YMCAs throughout the state.  There are 21 YMCA Associations in Texas, with over 13,000 employees and a combined budget of around $385 million.  Growth and expanded services are priorities for the Texas YMCA.  In the state, YMCAs are the largest providers of childcare, and also provide a range of other services in the community such as fitness and wellness activites, aquatics safety and training, sports leagues, mental health counseling, food/nutrition services and disaster response and mitigation.  

A stipend is available for this role.  The stipend amount will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications.
