Job Description

OVERVIEW: The Office of Senator Nathan Johnson is seeking a creative and motivated Communications Aide to join our communications team. This internship is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in video production, graphic design, and digital media to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced legislative environment.

Interns will contribute to the development and execution of visual and multimedia content that helps communicate the Senator’s work and priorities to constituents across Senate District 16 and the state of Texas.

JOB TITLE: Communications Aide

DEPARTMENT: Communications

LOCATION: District Office (Dallas, TX)

WORKING HOURS: Minimum of 15 hours per week. Must be available during standard office hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Communications Aide will report to the Communications Director and the Chief of Staff.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Interest in public service, storytelling, and visual communication
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, etc.)
  • Some experience or coursework in graphic design or video editing tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe
  • Creative Suite, CapCut, etc.)
  • Excellent time management and attention to detail
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative
  • Strong writing and collaboration skills
  • Ability to take direction and meet deadlines

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Support creation of digital content, including graphics, short videos, reels, and infographics
  • Assist with maintaining the social media calendar and drafting captions
  • Help edit and format video content for social media
  • Contribute to the design of graphics for newsletters, posts, and printed materials
  • Attend select events (if available) to help capture photo/video content
  • Participate in content planning and brainstorming sessions
  • Assist with tracking engagement metrics and gathering basic performance data
  • Ensure consistency in visual style and messaging across platforms
  • Maintain and update media contact lists

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE (Not Required):

  • Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or Illustrator
  • Basic experience with video editing platforms like CapCut, iMovie, or Premiere Pro
  • Interest in or experience with digital storytelling, content creation, or visual campaigns
  • Curiosity about Texas politics, public policy, or working in a legislative office
