The office of State Senator Nathan Johnson is seeking a bright and motivated individual to work as an unpaid Legislative Aide in the capitol office during the spring 2020 semester. The ideal candidate would be able to work 15-20 hours per week. The Legislative Aide will be expected to take on a wide range of responsibilities including policy research, office duties, and constituent services. JOB FUNCTIONS: • Conduct research on specific topics or policy in support of possible future legislation; • Perform administrative responsibilities in the office such as greeting guests, answering phones, etc.; • Brief Senator Johnson and staff on any policy issues, project progress, etc.; • Attend briefings and stakeholder meetings as needed; • Assist with constituent casework; and • Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: • Possesses intellectual curiosity and an interest in learning complex policy issues; • Availability to work 15 or more hours/week from the start of the internship until the end of the spring semester; greater availability will allow for greater focus on policy issues; • Excellent research and oral and written communication skills; • High level of organization; • Ability to maintain good working relationships; • Accepts performance-based criticism and direction; • Professional appearance and personality; and • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and internet-based research platforms.
