Respondents were asked, "If the 2018 Republican primary election for land commissioner were held today, which of the following candidates would you vote for, or haven't you thought about it enough to have an opinion?" Primary voters were identified based on their participation in a Texas primary election in 2012, 2014, or 2016. For Republican trial ballots, this includes 612 likely Republican primary voters. For Democratic trial ballots, this includes 453 likely Democratic primary voters.

Political courage took a back seat to political calculation as the renegade memo on the investigation of Carter Page was made public, completing the eclipse of the President’s State of the Union and, at least for the moment, the increasingly corrosive immigration debate. While the fiddling continues in a smoldering Washington, D.C., the Comptroller delivered bad news of a more mundane variety to the Senate Finance Committee this week, while financial bad news of a different sort added to the woes of a (somewhat) surprisingly beleaguered George P. Bush in his increasingly contentious primary battle to remain Land Commissioner. Beto had better financial news than either Glenn or George P. (That sentence shows why the first name thing works better for O’Rourke). National media attention to a report on white supremacist groups focusing recruiting efforts on college campuses featured their fairly piddling efforts on Texas campuses, through our data suggests that White Supremacy pretty clearly doesn’t have a data analytics department.

Respondents were first asked, "If the election for Texas State Land Commissioner were held today, would you vote for:" If they initially answered that they were undecided, they were then asked a follow-up question: If you had to make a choice, who would you choose? Responses to the follow-up questions were folded into the results found below. Only respondents who indicated that they were undecided in the original question and then skipped the follow-up question are categorized as undecideds for these results.

Respondents indicating that they would vote in the Republican primary were asked, "If the 2012 Republican primary election for lieutenant governor were held today, which of the following possible candidates would you vote for, or haven't you thought about it enough to have an opinion?" The order of the response options were randomized.
*Respondents were incorrectly asked about their primary vote for the 2012 primary for lieutenant governor, when they should have been asked about their vote intention for the 2014 Republican primary. This was corrected on the last day of interviewing, with no significant difference found between those asked their vote intention for 2012 versus 2014.

Likely voters were asked," If the 2014 Republican primary election for lieutenant governor were held today, which of the following possible candidates would you vote for, or haven't you thought about it enough to have an opinion? " "Likely Voters" were defined as those who indicated that they were either "Extremely" or "Somewhat" interested in politics in Q2 AND either voted in "Every" or "Almost every" election in Q3.
